The Challenge
Grief can be an isolating experience, especially for young people. Many struggle to navigate their emotions and often forget to show themselves the kindness and compassion they deserve.
Our workshop will help young people to explore topics such as loss and grief in a way that helps them to understand the challenges, and design solutions that can help themselves and others in the future.
What to expect
Our design workshops are a space for compassion, collaboration and creativity. Participants will be taken on a design thinking journey to create an emotional health toolkit for their school or community. Our workshops will take them through a journey of:
Discovery
Participants will be guided through playful exercises that promote emotional regulation, psycho-education & social emotional learning. They will participate in engaging discussions on self-compassion and its role in grief and learn more about the design challenge and their mission at hand.
Empathy
Participants will get into teams and be tasked with “putting themselves in their users shoes”. They will use their perspective taking skills to understand their world, and aim to understand what they are thinking & feeling and the problems they face.
Ideation
The teams will be encouraged to generate and visualise creative ideas in playful ways.
Prototyping
After ideation, the teams will be shown how to bring their ideas to life by creating a prototype or various prototypes that they can test with others. This includes a variety of different prototyping methods which we can tailor to suit your setting.
Testing
Teams will then be encouraged to test out their ideas and solutions and seek feedback from others, so that they can make improvements on their prototype.
Sharing
Finally, the teams will get to share their ideas with everyone and be encouraged to present at our final pitching ceremony. They will receive feedback and celebrate their journey with The Firefly Project - reflecting on what they have learnt.
Compassion at the heart of the classroom
The workshops aim to provide an enriching learning experience that build the following skills and has been informed by the National Curriculum.
Collaboration skills
They will team up to enhance their teamwork and communication skills whilst crafting emotional tools and resources for your setting.
Social emotional skills
We will use interactive and playful techniques to help children and young people build empathy and emotional resilience.
21st Century skills
Our design process teaches 21st Century skills such as critical thinking, and gain the confidence to solve real world problems.
